Gratitude Report

We are so grateful for the support our community has shown for the Every Moment Matters Campaign and the Hospice Peterborough Care Centre Project. We have compiled a report highlighting some of the many milestones throughout the campaign and leading to the opening celebrations.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to the Every Moment Matters Campaign. It is because of your generosity that we can offer another option for hospice, bereavement and end of life care in Peterborough City and County.

Fire Fighters Providing Comfort and Care

Peterborough – Thank you to the Peterborough Professional Fire Fighters Association (PPFFA) for making a HUGE difference to the comfort of our residents! With the generosity of a $5000 donation from PPFFA members, we were able to purchase two specialized mattresses that provide optimal comfort for our residents at end-of-life.

“We are very fortunate to have such a great organization in our community as Hospice Peterborough. PPFFA would like to congratulate them on their beautiful new facility. The fire service has a 50% cancer rate and we recognize the importance of palliative care. If we can help provide comfort to those residents who are struggling, it is our honor.” Said Jim Woodley, PPFFA Vice President.

This impactful donation by the PPFA has already and will continue to improve the quality of life for people throughout our community who spend their final days in our care.

“We sincerely thank the members of the Peterborough Professional Firefighters Association for recognizing Hospice Peterborough as an organization worthy of your trust and your philanthropic spirit.” Says Linda Sunderland, Executive Director.

The new Hospice Peterborough located at 325 London Street, is a reflection of a 30 year history of our ongoing commitment to hospice palliative care.  Hospice is a community of the living, seriously ill, those who are dying and those who are grieving. True to our vision it is a safe place where good and lasting memories are formed for our clients and their families at every stage of their journey.

The new Hospice Peterborough stands a beacon to support the needs of our community for future generations.

Hospice Peterborough Announces New Executive Director

Shelley Barrie, Chair of the Board of Hospice Peterborough, is pleased to announce the appointment of Hajni Hos as the new Executive Director of Hospice Peterborough. She will be replacing Linda Sunderland who is retiring after 26 years of dedicated service with Hospice.

Ms. Hos brings a wealth of organizational experience having served Peterborough’s New Canadians Centre as Executive Director for the past 9 years. During that time she has lead the organization through significant change and growth as it grew from a staff of 12 to 27 employees. Mrs. Barrie noted, “the similarity in size and structure of both organizations makes this an excellent fit for Ms. Hos and we are delighted to welcome her as our new Executive Director.”

A former lawyer from Budapest, Hungary, Ms. Hos moved to the area in 2008 to begin her work with the New Canadians Centre as an Employment Counsellor. This lead to her becoming the Executive Director in 2011. Ms. Hos has experience in Strategic Planning and Governance, Operational Programs and Services, Community Relations as well as Finance and Fundraising. She has completed the Not for Profit Governance Program from the Institute of Corporate Directors and the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management. Her awards include the Greater Peterborough Chamber of Commerce “4 Under 40” Business Excellence Award, the Paul Harris Fellowship from the Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha and the Peterborough-Kawartha Women’s Leadership Award.

Ms. Hos indicated her excitement in being able to lead the organization in this new phase; making a new building a new home, accomplishing Hospice Palliative Care Ontario Accreditation, creating a new organizational Strategic Plan, supporting a wonderful and truly committed staff and volunteer team and establishing a structure that serves the goals of this ever expanding organization. When asked about her new role, Ms Hos said, “I have been admiring the amazing work of Hospice Peterborough in our community for years, that is: helping people and their families living with life threatening illness and grief. It took me years to realize that Hospice is not about death. It is about the quality of life before it, a graceful closure, helping us face the unfaceable, and helping those who are left behind to honour their loved ones by allowing themselves to heal and live a full life. I feel that supporting members of our community in such a difficult time of their lives is a privilege and I feel compelled to take part in this amazing mission to the best of my ability, skills and heart.”

In her spare time, Ms. Hos enjoys working on the family farm with her husband and two children. She plays piano and sings in various choirs.

Ms. Hos will commence her duties on August 26, 2019.
