2008 Hospice Peterborough's Golf Tournament A BIG HIT

This past Tuesday, September 9th generous sponsors and golfers helped Hospice Peterborough raise over $14,000 to support people in our community living with a serious illness or grieving the loss of a loved one.

Golf Tournament Chair, Laurie Breese (seated on right) with her teammates.

This year's Golf Tournament paid tribute to the memory of Bernie Cahill. Bernie was a man who believed in family, community, compassion and knowledge. From humble beginnings in England, he came to Canada to start a new life, finally settling in Peterborough in 1974, raising his family, building a business and working to make Peterborough a more vibrant community. Bernie believed that success in life came from giving and helping others. He rarely said 'no' to a worthy community cause, spending much of his spare time helping support local charities, our hospital, and getting in a few rounds of golf when he could.

When Bernie was diagnosed with cancer in the spring of 2006 Hospice Peterborough was there for him providing caring support to him and his family. It was Hospice support along with the Nightingale nurses that allowed Bernie to remain at home, close to his family throughout his fight. Hospice Peterborough continues to be there for his wife and family. Bernie left behind his loving wife Margie and sons James, Robert and Richard. As a proud member of a community he loved, he truly believed that 'Peterborough is the best little city in Canada.' The tournament was a day for Hospice supporters, the Cahill family and friends to share a few stories and remember a man who is dearly missed.

Golfers were treated to a day of great golf, a barbecue lunch sponsored by Montana's Cookhouse, prizes and goodie bags for all, a chicken & rib dinner and lots of fun all to support the work of Hospice Peterborough.

"Our heartfelt appreciation to the Cahill Family, our golfers, sponsors, tournament organizers and volunteers, who made our day such a huge success. We are so grateful for all their support - we couldn't do it without them - thank you so much"!
