I Have a Life-Threatening Illness

Palliative Care Community Team

When you are diagnosed with a life-threatening illness, you are affected in many ways including, physically, emotionally and practically. You may struggle to make sense of treatment options, ask questions about the disease or ask “why me?” The Palliative Care Community Team (PCCT) includes Palliative Nurse Navigators and a Supportive Care Counsellor who can help explore these questions and link you with appropriate services as needed.

Family members can also be affected and roles can change as you undergo treatment and may need care or help with tasks you have always done.  This can cause changes in family dynamics and you or family members might wish to speak with the Supportive Care Counsellor.

Extended family and friends often want to visit and help but they may not know how. The PCCT can help you and caregivers figure out ways to engage family and friends in helpful ways.

Volunteer Support

Hospice Peterborough’s client support volunteers offer emotional support and practical help to individuals who are facing a life-threatening illness and relief time for those caring for them. They are flexible, caring people who have chosen to be visitors because they are genuinely interested in supporting you and your family. Hospice Peterborough’s volunteers come from all walks of life and have completed extensive training that meets nationally recognized standards.

Day Hospice

Hospice Peterborough’s Wednesday Day Hospice offers an opportunity to meet others living with a life-threatening illness and share your concerns and experiences. Support groups for men and women are facilitated by Hospice staff and held in the morning from 10am to 12pm. Consider staying for optional lunch and afternoon activities such as complementary therapy. Hospice Peterborough strives to remove barriers to access. If you have any accessibility challenges we will work to accommodate them.

Wellness Support

The Gentle Exercise program runs on Fridays at 1pm for those wishing to participate in easy, gentle exercises that everyone can do. Other wellness programs are offered periodically depending on interest and need. Please refer to this website page for up-to-date information or contact us with your ideas.

Complimentary Therapies such as Reiki are offered on Wednesdays after Day Hospice or in the community as requested.  The goal is to connect people with complementary therapies by registered professionals.
